PANORAMA and the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction: Advancing Knowledge for a Resilient Europe

13/10/2025
Every year on 13 October, the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) highlights the importance of reducing exposure and vulnerability to hazards. As emphasized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), there is “no such thing as a natural disaster”: disasters occur when natural hazards interact with vulnerable systems, exposed populations, and insufficient preparedness. This principle is central to the objectives of PANORAMA. The project works to strengthen Europe’s capacity to observe, assess, and manage environmental and climate-related risks through an integrated approach. PANORAMA brings together Earth Observation and modelling information to provide the knowledge base needed for coherent risk assessment and management across regions and sectors. By connecting scientific research, policy, and practice, PANORAMA aims to help:
  • Detect vulnerabilities and exposure in communities and ecosystems.
  • Monitor changing risk landscapes in the context of climate change
  • Support resilient planning and adaptation through evidence-based tools
  • Encourage knowledge exchange across sectors, and disciplines.
The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction provides an opportunity to acknowledge that preparedness and informed decision-making are among the most effective means of reducing future losses. Through its integrative framework and open exchange of data and methodologies, PANORAMA contributes to building a more risk-aware and resilient Europe.
