World Meteorological Day: How PANORAMA Strengthens Climate and Environmental Intelligence

01/04/2026

Every year on 23 March, the international community celebrates World Meteorological Day, recognising the vital role that meteorology, climate science and environmental observations play in protecting societies and supporting sustainable development.

Meteorological observations are fundamental for understanding atmospheric processes, monitoring climate change and improving early warning systems for extreme events. In recent decades, the rapid expansion of satellite-based Earth Observation has significantly strengthened our ability to observe the planet, providing continuous, global measurements of atmospheric, land and ocean conditions.

PANORAMA: From Observations to Actionable Services

The PANORAMA Project, funded under Horizon Europe, builds on this growing wealth of Earth Observation data to develop next-generation services that improve prediction and response to environmental hazards.

PANORAMA integrates multiple data sources, including meteorological satellite observations, atmospheric measurements and advanced modelling techniques, to support applications such as:

  • improved forecasting of severe weather and hydrometeorological events
  • monitoring and prediction of smoke and air quality conditions
  • enhanced understanding of environmental dynamics affecting renewable energy, such as solar radiation
  • development of integrated Earth Observation services supporting decision-makers

By transforming complex environmental data into accessible information and services, PANORAMA aims to support authorities, researchers and stakeholders in managing environmental risks and strengthening resilience.

Collaboration Across the European EO Ecosystem

PANORAMA is part of a broader effort within the European Earth Observation community to strengthen the link between satellite data, environmental services and policy implementation.

In this context, PANORAMA collaborates with sister Horizon Europe projects such as GreenEO and CLEAR-EO, sharing knowledge and exploring synergies that contribute to a more coherent and impactful European Earth Observation ecosystem.

Together, these initiatives demonstrate how scientific innovation, satellite infrastructure and collaborative research can support better environmental intelligence and more informed decision-making.

GreenEO

GreenEO is a Horizon Europe project that leverages Earth Observation (EO) data to support environmental monitoring and climate action across Europe. By combining satellite observations with advanced modelling and digital tools, GreenEO develops solutions to better understand and manage challenges among four focus areas (air quality, land use, forest fire risk, and ecosystem health).

The project places strong emphasis on real-world applications and stakeholder engagement, ensuring that its tools support informed decision-making for policymakers and public authorities. In the context of meteorology, GreenEO highlights the growing role of satellite data in improving our understanding of atmospheric processes and environmental change.

CLEAR EO

CLEAR-EO contributes to the development of Destination Earth by advancing the use of satellite data and cloud-based analysis within Europe’s digital twin ecosystem. The project provides innovative data processing chains and geospatial notification services that enhance DestinE’s modelling and simulation capacity with real-time Earth observation insights.

By integrating next-gen satellite data, CLEAR-EO strengthens the ability to deliver faster high-resolution environmental intelligence for climate adaptation in agriculture, air quality forecasting, and urban flood management.

Through these contributions, CLEAR-EO supports the European Commission’s vision of a federated, data-driven digital twin of the Earth, reinforcing Europe’s leadership in sustainable and climate-resilient digital innovation.

Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow

World Meteorological Day highlights the importance of sustained observations for understanding and protecting our planet. Through projects such as PANORAMA, CLEAR EO and Green EO, Earth Observation technologies continue to advance our capacity to monitor environmental change and anticipate future challenges.
